David Hoddinott Unveils Gander Gardens

Newfoundland’s Senior Hockey glory days of the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s, are widely regarded as the province’s most magical and historic era for this favorite winter pastime. The “original seven” teams of that era were followed steadfastedly by fans in their respective towns and cities, and the arenas they played in were household names made recognizable through popular radio and print coverage during that time.

The first edition in the series, “Gander Gardens” has now been completed and released for public Sale. It is hoped that all the Prints in the series can not only preserve memories within the community but be utilized by groups and organizations as fundraisers within the towns and cities they represent.

The main centers for hockey during this time were:

* St. John’s
* Gander
* Grand Falls
* Corner Brook
* Harbor Grace
* Bell Island
* Buchans

Renowned Newfoundland artist is recapturing the magic of this era through a new series of Limited Edition Prints entitled “Historic Homes of Newfoundland Hockey” limited edition prints. These prints not only preserve the memories of a golden age for a sport, but also depict the essence of the Arenas in these communities that served as the homes for the teams and games that provided so much drama during that period, and helped bring entire communities together in support of a common cause.

Limited edition of 600 prints are being produced for each Historic Hockey Home. These prints will focus on the architectural image of the building itself and capture the elements of the team that played there as well as any significant historical elements surrounding the team (i.e. Herder Championships, Allan Cup championships, etc.)

Gander Gardens is now being celebrated as the first edition in this series. This series will celebrate the arenas and communities that hosted the glory days of Senior Hockey in this province. Gander Gardens hosted the Senior Flyers for many exciting years, but also played an important role in minor hockey in the area for decades. Series two, which is coming soon, will recapture the glory days of Joe Byrne Arena.
