James Moore is a local artist, born and educated in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He received his early education at Bishop’s College, and graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1967 with a degree in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education.

In 1981, Jim took on the challenge of teaching art in an expanding high school program for the Roman Catholic School Board for St. John’s. He was awarded a grand from the Episcopal Corporation of St. John’s to further his art education. In addition, he was given an Elliot O’Hara Scholarship to attend an intensive seven-week summer course at the Phobe Flory Watercolor School in Mount Vernon, New Hampshire (affiliated with Notre Dame College in Manchester, New Hampshire). This course was the equivalent of one and one-half years of university studio training, completed with a straight “A” standing. In 1983, he successfully completed a summer watercolor painting course in Kennebunkport, Maine and under the direction of Dr. Richard Smultz, Harvard University. In 1986, he was elected to the Executive of the Provincial Special Interest Council of the Newfoundland & Labrador Teacher’s Association.

Jim has exhibited his paintings at THE GALLERY, Duckworth Street, St. John’s. In 1992, he was commissioned by the Canadian Standard’s Association to paint 12 paintings for special delegates attending their convention at Hotel Newfoundland. In 1992, he was commissioned to design the logo for the Roman Catholic School Board of St. John’s. “Having a Chat” and “Jack Well’s Wharf” are the first two prints Jim has issued of his work. At the present time, Jim is exhibiting his paintings from his home, 128 Elizabeth Avenue, St. John’s.
