Ron was born and raised on Bell Island and has spent most of his life in Newfoundland and Labrador. While pursuing a teaching career, he took up painting in oils as a hobby. Now retired from teaching, he lives in picturesque Harbour Main
Over the years, Ron has developed his art primarily through self-instruction and workshops while living in Labrador. After moving back to Newfoundland, he discovered acrylics as a new and exciting medium while studying with local artists Don Short, Ed Roche, Virginia Houston and Les Noseworthy.
Ron is mainly occupied with representation of his native province. Landscapes, seascapes, boats and buildings in rural Newfoundland are his favorite scenes to capture, and are depicted in a realistic fashion, mostly with acrylic on canvas. However, he does not restrict himself to these subjects, and has dabbled in portraiture, still life and city themes as well.
Most of Ron’s work is based on reference photos that he prefers to take himself in order to obtain the scope and detail that he desires to have in each painting. He strives to capture the atmosphere and mood of the scene he is depicting on canvas and likes to experiment with a variety of techniques to accomplish this goal.
Ron has a number of limited editions prints and originals in several galleries on the Avalon Peninsula, and is available for commissions as well.
