About The Print
Sinnott Promotions began working on the Newfoundland Labrador Songwriters print project in June 2004. What song would we start with? It was clear to us from the beginning we needed to acquire permission from Ron Hynes to use the words of “Sonny’s Dream”. Hynes wrote the song in 1976 and a year later on his first performance of the song to a live audience it became an instant hit in his home of Newfoundland & Labrador.
Since the time “Sonny’s Dream” has been recorded in over a dozen countries with individual recordings now exceeding one hundred. It is Newfoundland’s best known and loved song, and one of the most popular songs written by a Canadian songwriter. The song has crossed borders into many countries including the United States where it was recorded by Emmylou Harris, and Ireland where both Mary Black and Christy Moore made it one of Ireland’s best-loved songs.
The song has taken on a life of its’ own. It is sung by old and young alike to weddings and funerals. The “kitchen party” could hardly be complete without a rendition of “Sonny’s Dream”.
Upon the acquisition of “Sonny’s Dream” we now had to overcome the most difficult task, what visual presentation would depict the universal expression of “Sonny’s Dream”? We decided early on that for this project we wanted a photograph that was pure and not enhanced by digital imaging. We looked at several pieces of work by many artists. Our search ended when we looked at award-winning Newfoundland photographer Ray Fennelly’s “Celebration”. This photo was taken on New Year’s Eve 1979-1980 at Bear Cove Point Lighthouse, Renews, Newfoundland. This two-minute exposure resulted in the full moon of the time reflecting off the lens of the camera giving the illusion of looking through a window. The capturing of the constellation Orion adds to the mystery of the image.
During the next few weeks that followed we finalized the design and printed each print individually. The result was a gorgeous archival limited edition fine print. Printed on Hahneumuhle paper with archival inks “Sonny’s Dream” is signed by both artists and is numbered to a limited edition of 800. This print will be sold in three countries, Canada, United States, and Ireland. A launch is planned for St. John’s at a concert given by Hynes at the LSPU Hall on November 28th. During the concert the audience will get a chance to view the print first hand and place orders for their copy. The LSPU Hall is a very fitting place to launch the print as the first live performance of “Sonny’s Dream” took place there.
Planned events for Halifax and Toronto are in place for November 2004 and February 2005 respectively. The date and the location of the Irish launch are pending.
The Newfoundland Labrador Songwriters print project will bring international attention to the works of some of our best-loved songwriters, spoken word, and visual artists.
